About the faculty
„In 1922, the Faculty of Humanities was established at the University of Lithuania. After several decades of activity, when Lithuania was occupied by the Soviet Union, it was the very first faculty to be transferred to Vilnius, where it became the nucleus of the Lithuanian Vilnius University. In 1988, the Re-establishment Council of Vytautas Magnus University regarded the revival of the Faculty of Humanities in Kaunas as its foremost task. It was hoped that this would transform Kaunas from a city that had become technocratic into a modern center of humanistic culture. A humanistic “epidemic” swept through Kaunas—though, unfortunately, it did not last long. The mission of the Faculty of Humanities at VDU has not changed: our goal is to humanize the academy and to humanize Kaunas. Yet humanism should not be confined to a single faculty; like salt, it must permeate everything. This is what we will strive for tirelessly.“
